TEDxMaastricht – The Future of Health

22. February 2012

80% of the Dutch population consults ‘Doctor Google’ prior to visiting their GP. Patients are more informed and better organized in associations than ever before. But are healthcare professionals ready for active participation of patients, family and informal caregivers? This changing world of healthcare is what TEDxMaastricht The Future of Health is all about: the first TEDx healthcare event. Win free tickets for the event!

The future of healthcare

What do we need to make sure the health world will indeed be ready around 2025? How should doctors change their methods of working? Can medical information be freely accessible to everyone? Why is compassion essential to the future of healthcare? Do patients have personal responsibility as well? These questions and more will be discussed during TEDxMaastricht The Future of Health: unconventional thinkers and doers from the worlds of technology, entertainment, design, healthcare, science, business and art will be sharing their ideas about the healthcare of the future. The speakers include: Roni Zeiger, Naveen Jain, Bart Knols and Geert Vandewalle. More names will be announced in the next few weeks. The 900 seats in this magnificent theatre will be filled with healthcare afficionados from all over Europe, from ministers to nurses, from doctors to receptionists.

” Since 1984 TED has excelled in providing a stage for inspiring people from the worlds of technology, entertainment and design. I am proud that we in Maastricht will be adding the capital ‘H’ of ‘Health’ to this list.” Jim Stolze – licensee TEDxAmsterdam and TEDxMaastricht

Ideas worth spreading

TED stands for Technology Entertainment Design and started off in the US in 1984 as a platform for ideas from these three worlds. It has since developed into a worldwide phenomenon, with speakers including Bill Clinton, Oliver Sacks and Graig Venter sharing the stage. The TEDx programme has developed based on the notion of ‘ideas worth spreading’. TEDx stands for independently organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. According to many, participating in a TED event equals attending the World Cup final or an Oscar ceremony.

“In view of the challenges in the healthcare arena that we are facing together, such as escalating costs, labour market problems and patient participation, everyone should be granted ‘a giant pill of inspiration’, in order for old ideas to be taken up again and new ones to be born.” Lucien Engelen Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Centre – initiator and curator TEDxMaastricht
